“ROBERTSON COUNTY’S HERITAGE OF HOMES”

The McMurry House at 311 North Main Street is an impressive Colonial Revival mansion.
William McMurry, a prominent tobacco businessman in Robertson County, began constructing this substantial house in 1896. William and wife, Lizzie, selected as the site of their home a town lot deeded in 1891 to McMurry by the heirs of I.A. Eckles. Lizzie was the daughter of I.A. and Gabriella Hockersmith Eckles.
The house is a large two-story frame house with clapboard siding. Characteristic of the Colonial Revival architecture are the massive 22-foot-tall Ionic columns and balcony. The eaves are lined with wooden dentils and brackets. The house I supported by a raised course stone foundation. In 1923, the structure was extensively remodeled, giving the house its present appearance.
McMurry had a fifty-year career in the tobacco industry. In 1916, he built Springfield’s second loose floor, McMurry Loose Leaf Tobacco Company. His son, Paul, and son-in-law, Louis Morrison, assisted in the operation of the business. William McMurry died in 1935.
William and Lizzie had three children: Paul, Charles, and Helen. In 1940 Lizzie McMurry deeded the house to her daughter, Helen McMurry Morrison, who died in 1952. After the death in 1957 of her husband, Louis Morrison, the house was sold to T.A. Hudson and Eugene Beck. In 1973, the house was purchased by its present owners, Max W. and Dorothy J.Reedy.
